Round 1

THE CHASE IS ON! ONE RACE AT A TIME TdGLHKq

The race: Geico 400, Chicagoland Speedway, Sept. 15 (2 p.m. ET, ESPN).

The lowdown: The 1.5-mile track in Joliet, Ill., will be without one of its historically best drivers -- Tony Stewart -- when the green flag falls on this edition of the Chase. Stewart has won three times there, with future Stewart-Haas Racing teammate Kevin Harvick next on the track's win list with two victories. Starting up front isn't vastly important at Chicagoland -- only four times in the 12 races the track has hosted has the winning driver started in the first five rows. Oddly enough, a Ford has yet to break through for a Sprint Cup victory at Chicagoland, which joined the Chase rotation in 2011.

JUAN PABLO MONTOYA HEADS TO PENSKE IN 2014

http://www.nascar.com/en_us/news-media/articles/2013/09/16/juan-pablo-montoya-to-join-team-penske-in-2014-nascar-sprint-cup-series.html

Driver is heading back to IndyCar after seven-year NASCAR career

Despite discussions with several NASCAR Sprint Cup Series teams, an offer to drive for IndyCar’s most successful team, Penske Racing, proved irresistible to former open-wheel champion Juan Pablo Montoya, who announced Monday he will drive a third car for the organization in 2014.

“If you really dream of an ideal position for a driver, and say you can race for Penske, that would be number one,’’ Montoya, 37, told reporters Monday. “When it was announced I wouldn’t be in the (Earnhardt Ganassi Racing) 42 (Sprint Cup car), my number one choice was to be in a winning car. … You didn’t even have to think about it.’’

Penske Racing President Tim Cindric said the deal to sign Montoya was completed quickly -- so fast, in fact, the team doesn’t have a single sponsor lined up yet for Montoya’s No. 2 Chevrolet.

“Juan and I ran into each other on the (NASCAR) grid at Michigan (Aug. 18),’’ Cindric explained, “I said, ‘We ought to put you in that IndyCar’ and he said, ‘Let’s talk about it.’ Casual conversation kind of turned in to the real deal and that’s how we ended up here today.’’

As for the lack of sponsorship, Cindric laughed and said, “We put the competitive element in play first and then we’ll sort everything else out.’’

Montoya -- the only driver with wins in the 24 Hours of Daytona, the Indianapolis 500 and Formula One’s Grand Prix of Monaco -- became a high-profile free agent last month when his Sprint Cup team owner Chip Ganassi announced that 21-year-old Kyle Larson would drive the No. 42 Target Chevrolet in 2014, becoming the first of NASCAR’s Drive for Diversity graduates to secure a full-time ride in the sport’s premier Sprint Cup level.

Some were under the impression Montoya would stay in NASCAR and sign with Furniture Row Racing, which qualified for its first Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup with driver Kurt Busch. But although Montoya was impressed during a visit to the team’s shop and facilities in Denver recently, he said he felt it just came down to having a better chance at winning, driving for Penske’s IndyCar operation.

In seven NASCAR seasons driving for the Earnhardt Ganassi team, Montoya won the 2007 Rookie of the Year award in addition to nine Coors Light Poles wards and two races -- on both of NASCAR’s road courses, Sonoma Raceway and Watkins Glen International.
He qualified for the 2009 Chase field and reminded reporters Monday that he is still the only Ganassi driver to make the Chase.

Montoya was adamant he doesn’t leave his NASCAR tenure with regrets but perhaps some unfinished business, reiterating his desire to win on an oval on one of the remaining nine tracks this season.

“I don’t feel like I wasted my years in NASCAR,’’ Montoya said. “It made me a lot better driver. . … I learned a lot, I became a lot smarter driver.

“We did win races and we did make the Chase. . … Did I want more success? Of course, yes. The reason we’re here today is because I want more success.’’

Montoya joked and ultimately conceded it could be a bit awkward in the upcoming months considering his current team owner Chip Ganassi has long been the Penske team’s primary rival in IndyCar. In fact, Montoya won the 1999 IndyCar championship and 2000 Indianapolis 500 for Ganassi.

Montoya said he tried to call Ganassi on Monday before the announcement, but that Ganassi was in Europe. The two did exchange text messages.

“He was very excited for me,’’ Montoya said. “We are good friends. … he had to make a decision this year [to replace Montoya] and I had the great chance to go with Roger Penske.”

As for his mixed loyalties in the next few months, Montoya laughed.

“I will have a little white flag, be very neutral there,’’ Montoya said. “I’m committed to Chip for the next nine races and working really hard to get that oval win before the end of the year.’’

With his success in both IndyCar and NASCAR, Montoya becomes a natural candidate to attempt the Memorial Day “Double” competing in both the Indy 500 and NASCAR’s Coca-Cola 600.

“I’ve learned never to say never,’’ Cindric said. “We certainly haven’t had any of those discussions, but if something makes sense out there we certainly wouldn’t close the door on it. But certainly with us, IndyCar racing will be his focus.’’

On Sept. 5, Montoya received a Hispanic Heritage Award for sports, an honor bestowed upon him by the Hispanic Heritage Foundation during its annual meeting in Washington, D.C., as part of Hispanic Heritage Month.

NASCAR FANTASY PREVIEW: NEW HAMPSHIRE

The final 10 races of the season are comprised of four events on similarly configured 1.5-mile tracks. One of these is in the books as Matt Kenseth got off to a great start with his victory in the Geico 400 at Chicagoland Speedway. Drivers cannot win the Chase for the NASCAR Sprint Cup without an excellent record on that track type, but this week will prove to be just as pivotal.

Last week, fantasy players were told to concentrate on Chase contenders and that was the right strategy as they took the top six spots as well as 10 of the top 12 positions. New Hampshire Motor Speedway is equally kind to Chase drivers.

The Sylvania 300 is the first of three races that will be held on short, flat tracks measuring a mile or less in length, and drivers have to show patience and back the corners up by braking early and then accelerating hard at the apex of the turns. If they sweep the top-10 on similarly configured 1.5-mile tracks and finish well in New Hampshire, Martinsville and Phoenix, they can afford to take a mulligan in one of the remaining three races.

If last year is an indication, fantasy players can look to this July's Camping World RV Sales 301 as a strong indicator of who will run well on Sunday. In 2012, three drivers swept the top five at New Hampshire, seven drivers swept the top 10, and 13 of a possible 15 drivers swept the top 15. If a driver did not finish 15th or better in New Hampshire's first race this year, he should probably not be on a fantasy roster unless the selection is for the final, bargain-basement slot.

The Favorites

Jimmie Johnson was among those who swept the top 10 last year, and he is one of only three drivers to enter the weekend with at least three consecutive strong runs there. He finished sixth this summer, and if the pattern holds, he is due another strong run. He is capable of piling top-10s upon each other at New Hampshire and he had a seven-race top-10 streak going as recently as 2007 through 2010. That streak culminated in a victory in the Lenox Industrial Tools 301, so fantasy players can reasonably expect him to score maximum points. His salary cap took a hit in recent weeks with a string of bad luck and missed setups at the end of the regular season, but that only means that he is more affordable.

If Jeff Gordon had not made the Chase, he probably would not be listed as one of the favorites, but contenders will continue to dominate the top 10 in 2013 just as they have during the past nine years. A top-10 is quite likely since he has six of those in the past seven New Hampshire races and a worst result of 11th. He has also been consistent on the other short, flat tracks this year with a worst effort of 11th in the spring at Richmond. He will not earn maximum points since he has only one top-five in five races on this track type this season, but he should be a good value nevertheless. Even if he misses the top five, he will be one of this week's best bargains, because he has scored nearly 10 percent of the fastest laps run during the past 17 races and leads the league in that category.

Brad Keselowski made his debut at New Hampshire in 2009 while racing part-time for James Finch. He scored his third career top-10 after starting deep in the field in 36th with just a little help from the rain. His next three attempts on this track were not quite as impressive until he entered the 2011 Sylvania 300. That afternoon, he crossed under the checkers second to Tony Stewart. He has been practically perfect since with finishes of sixth or better in four consecutive races. This spring, he earned the sixth-most points in the NASCAR Fantasy Live game; he will be an equally good value this week.

Dark Horses

Gordon, Johnson, and Tony Stewart are in their own league in regard to fastest laps run during the past eight years at New Hampshire, but Kasey Kahne leads the next pack. In that same span of time, he has logged 300 fastest laps, which equates to seven percent of the available green-flag circuits. Denny Hamlin is in that same range, and then the numbers begin to dwindle quickly. Last year, Kahne won the summer Lenox Industrial Tools 301 and finished fifth in the fall, but he slipped to 11th this July. That could put him under the radar screen and make him an attractive pick for fantasy rosters.

Carl Edwards' salary cap continues to struggle to catch up to his current level of success, and that makes him a great value most weeks. It has not always been that way in 2013, but both of his victories this season came on this track type at Phoenix International Raceway in the Subway Fresh Fit 500 and in the final race of the regular season at Richmond International Raceway in the Federated Auto Parts 400. He also finished in the top 10 at Richmond in the spring and New Hampshire this summer, which is in stark contrast to his record on short, flat tracks last year. With the exception of Martinsville Speedway, he could sweep the top 10 on this track type in 2013. He is a good differentiator since he is not the first driver who comes to mind on short courses.

Underdogs

On the heels of six consecutive top-10s, Joey Logano entered the final regular-season race with his destiny in his own hands. He nearly squandered the opportunity by playing safe at Richmond. He made a bold statement last week at Chicagoland with a record-setting pole run, but a blown engine has him in a deep hole where the Chase is concerned. This Young Gun exudes confidence, but his Achilles' heel in 2013 has been short, flat tracks. In five previous starts, he has finished outside the top 20 four times, including the 22nd-place result in the Federated Auto Parts 400 that nearly dropped him out of the top 10 in points.

Greg Biffle did just enough in the last short, flat track race to qualify for the Chase. He ran a conservative race, finished 12th, and his berth in the playoffs was never in question. He did not earn a lot of points and was only the 15th-best value, however. That has been a consistent pattern on short, flat tracks with a best result of ninth at Martinsville and the majority of his results in the teens. He should be watched in practice and qualification for signs of strength, because last year he scored four top-10s in the final five races on this track type. He could reverse his fortunes once more, but that is difficult to predict before the weekend begins.

NASCAR FANTASY PREVIEW: DOVER

Last week’s venue, New Hampshire Motor Speedway had only 12 degrees of banking. This week, drivers will try to master the 24 degree corners of Dover International Speedway. While it would seem that these two one-mile courses have very little in common, they are both rhythm tracks and many of the same drivers who excelled last week will be near the front of the pack again in the AAA 400.

Rhythm tracks require drivers to hit extremely precise marks and as a result, organizations with less funding than the superteams can often compete near the front of the pack. Casey Mears finished 16th in this spring’s FedEx 400. Richard Petty Motorsports’ placed both of their drivers in the top 20 with Aric Almirola taking home the 18th-place check and Marcos Ambrose finishing 19th.

Finishing in the top 10 will continue to be a challenge for the non-Chase contenders this week, however. Last year Chasers recorded an average finish of 11.7 at Dover on the strength of three top-fives and six top-10s. That compares to Chicagoland’s average finish of 11.6 two weeks ago and New Hampshire’s 12.1.

Fantasy players will want to anchor their roster with Chasers, but they cannot forget about dark horses because they will be needed to extend one’s salary cap.
