APOLLO LANDING SITES

APOLLO LANDINGS

Come with me as I take pictures through my telescope of where each Apollo spacecraft landed on the Moon
This will be the first in a series that I will do on the Apollo Moon Landings. I will give details on the missions and show where each Apollo Mission Landed on the Moon. There  were six moon landings during the Apollo Program.
Growing up during the "Space Race" was incredible. I remember trying to see every launch I could see. I remember "Redstone" and the "Atlas"  Programs that led to The Gemini Program that was the first program for "Training" for the Moon.In the Gemini program NASA learned to dock spacecraft ,walk in space and design suits for the harsh environment of the Moon. The first of the Apollo program was tragic as we lost Three Astronauts Grissom,White and Chaffey. From that flash fire during testing NASA learned never to use a pure oxygen environment in their spacecrafts again. Apollo 2 and 3 were never named . Apollo 4,5,6 were unmanned missions to make sure of the safety of the Spacecraft. Apollo 7, 8 ,9 and 10 were manned  for test missions and practice runs for Apollo 11 to land on the Moon.
                                                                              Apollo 11
The first of the Apollo program to land on the Moon was Apollo 11. I remember after they landed I took a nap so I could be up to watch Neil Armstrong step off the Lunar Module and say "Man's" first words on the moon "That's one small step for man and one Giant leap for Mankind" Followed by Aldrin's first words "Magnificent Desolation" . Now if you wanted to be technical when the Lunar Module first touched down this is what was said.
Aldrin : "Contact Light"

Armstrong: "Shutdown"

Aldrin: "Okay,engine stop"

Aldrin: "ACA out of Detent."

Armstrong: "Out of Detent. Auto."

Aldrin: Mode Control, both Auto. Descent Engine Command Override, Off. Engine Arm, Off. 413 is in.

Duke(Mission Control): We copy you down, Eagle.

Armstrong : Engine arm is off. ........ Houston, Tranquility Base here. The Eagle has landed.

Duke:  Roger, Twan...(correcting himself) Tranquility. We copy you on the ground. You got a bunch of guys about to turn blue. We're breathing again. Thanks a lot.

Aldrin: Thank you.

The rest is history.....

Launch occurred on July 16, 1969, at 9:32 a.m

The "Eagle" landed in the Sea of Tranquillity at 4:18 p.m.

Mission: Measure the cosmic wind(Space Weather) get core samples of the Moon's surface and take panoramic pictures.

Location on the Moon: Longitude: 23.5° East
Latitude: 0.7° North
Quadrant: North-East
Area: East part of Mare Tranquillitatis (Sea of Tranquility)

Landing site:

Next will be Apollo 12. Till then "Clear Sky's"

Thank you, Gomey. This was a major deal in the JR Sr. household, and one of the few youthful (8 yr old) memories that are cemented in the brain. I still have the commemorative Apollo 11 book, a 3'x3' moon map, and the mini-telescope that my Dad got for me back then.

Being one of the "young" people here this was a little before my time but appreciate the write up gomey.  My first real experience was with the Space Shuttle Challenger that blew up with Christa McAuliffe (school teacher) on board. I was rarely ill but coincidentally was home sick that day watching it all unfold from the couch.
