Raining heavy here again. Lots of storms around here today. Not sure what is causing this, but definitely an uptick in activity coming in from the Gulf. Didn't see this widespread activity in the forecast for today. Hope it clears out for the weekend. We are meeting most of my family down in Dunnellon tomorrow to float the Rainbow River. It is a nice way to spend a hot summer day, but is not fun and very cold in a storm.

Must be due to the trof axis NWS Jax mentioned in their pre-dawn discussion: Today...As the moist airmass indicates will be likely a quicker
start to diurnal convection across NE FL with scattered to
numerous showers and storms by the late morning and early
afternoon hours with slow and erratic storm motion due to trof
axis in the region.

Have the day off today so ran a few errands then visited daughter and grandson for a couple hours.  Got home, opened the remote controlled garage door and saw a 3' black racer slither inside the garage.  He was up front near my trash can so I grabbed a broom and attempted to gently guide him back out.  Little booger went the opposite direction behind some storage cabinets lining the wall.  Got up by the door to my kitchen and he popped from behind a plastic tub and took a strike at me.  I never knew I had a 40" vertical leap, lol.  Long story short, neighbor came over, we had to pull a bunch of stuff out from the garage walls then were able to get him back in the yard after 15 minutes.  I then misplaced my wallet sometime during the fray but found it a few minutes later.

No signs of weakening anytime soon WD. Rainfall totals are going to be quite impressive if these keep meandering around for another hour or two.

Have fun on the Rainbow River. I love that place. An x-employer of mine has a place 1/4 south of the bridge. Had a few bbq's up there. It's a great swim/float. Don't forget the water cannon!!

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
917 AM EDT Fri Aug 18 2017

...A Few Strong Storms Possible This Afternoon...

.UPDATE...
A Large upper level low located over north-central Cuba
with a trough axis extending north into the Florida
peninsula this morning will continue to move slowly to the
west the remainder of today. Water vapor imagery as well as
12Z MFL raob data shows drier and cooler mid level air
associated with the upper low advecting into southern
portions of the peninsula early this morning where PW`s at
MFL has dropped to 1.46 inches with 500MB temperatures now
at -9C. This drier and cooler mid level air may lead to some
some strong convection developing along the sea breeze
across southwest Florida during the afternoon hours with
strong downburst winds and small hail being the main hazards
along with frequent lightning strikes and heavy rain.

Further to the north across central and northern portions of
the forecast area deep layered moisture (PW`s 2+ inches and
milder mid level temperatures will again support scattered
to numerous showers and storms developing along the sea
breeze and outflow boundaries during the afternoon with a
very weak steering flow through 700MB again supporting slow
and erratic storm motion with some very heavy rainfall
amounts possible in some locations along with frequent
lightning strikes and some gusty winds. Given the cooler
drier air aloft will add gusty winds and hail wording into
the forecast for southwest Florida for the afternoon, and
will also add heavy rain and gusty winds wording for central
and northern zones given the high PW`s and slow and erratic
storm motion. Other than these minor tweaks no other changes
are planned at this time. Zone update will be out by 10 AM.

The meat of the storm flared up just west and south with 1.5 - 3" a couple miles away but my gauge check has .63". Exceeded my expectation so I am pleased.

Sharp gradient between the anvil cloud and clear skies looking east vs west. It'll be firing up some Friday afternoon BBQ shortly.

I'm liking this!

Shower and thunderstorm activity associated with an area of low
pressure located about 600 miles east-northeast of the Leeward
Islands continues to show signs of organization. However,
upper-level winds are becoming less favorable, and the chances for
a tropical cyclone to form are diminishing. The low is expected to
move west-northwestward at about 20 mph during the next few days,
and interests in the northern Leeward Islands should monitor the
progress of this disturbance.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...60 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...60 percent.

Atlantic 5-Day Graphical Tropical Weather Outlook

Tropical Weather Outlook
NWS National Hurricane Center Miami FL
800 PM EDT Fri Aug 18 2017

For the North Atlantic...Caribbean Sea and the Gulf of Mexico:

The National Hurricane Center is issuing advisories on Tropical
Storm Harvey, located over the eastern Caribbean Sea.

1. Showers and thunderstorms associated with an area of disturbed
weather located about 500 miles east-northeast of the northern
Leeward Islands have become less organized since yesterday due to
strong upper-level winds, and satellite data suggest that the
surface circulation has become less defined.  Environmental
conditions are expected to be only marginally conducive for
development during the next couple of days while this system moves
west-northwestward at about 20 mph, and the chances for tropical
cyclone formation appear to be decreasing.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...medium...50 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...medium...50 percent.

2. A tropical wave located over the far eastern Atlantic Ocean, almost
a thousand miles west of the Cabo Verde Islands, is producing
limited shower and thunderstorm activity.  Environmental conditions
appear somewhat conducive for gradual development over the next few
days while the system moves west-northwestward to northwestward at
about 20 mph, but upper-level winds are forecast to become
unfavorable by the middle of next week.
* Formation chance through 48 hours...low...10 percent.
* Formation chance through 5 days...low...30 percent.

Incredible. Nothing but a few sprinkle at my place. I took off as it was starting to come in, and got my rain on I-75. Torrential from the Turnpike to Ocala. TGFRx (Thank God for Rain-x). I apparently blew out the gears on the driver's wiper in the middle of that mess. No rain here on the westside of Jax.
