Good chilly morning. brrrrr

Winter Storm Watch has been issued for inland NE FL and SE GA for snow and ice. Looks like a cold rain here with temps in the 30's tomorrow. So close but yet so far away. I'm still hoping to see a few flakes mix in with the rain. I'll know soon enough.

Forecast continues to drop with 2 nights now forecast at 27 and another at 30. Looks like temps rebound to normal levels by Sunday. As chilly as it's been and continue to be in the days ahead 65 will feel like a heat wave, lol.

Happy New Year!!!
Well it was 38 this am with a wind chill at 30.5
Makes it a little BRR Out. Hoping the rain comes in heavy and just maybe we could see a few flakes up my way. Fingers crossed. The end of the week looks the coldest. Will most likely see mid 20's around my parts.
Have a great day!!!!

Post by LargoFL on Tue Jan 02, 2018 10:27 am

yeah gale force winds out from our east coast ............NWS Melbourne......Jan 2 2018

...GALE WARNING REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 PM EST THIS AFTERNOON...
...SMALL CRAFT ADVISORY IN EFFECT FROM 4 PM THIS AFTERNOON TO
4 AM EST THURSDAY...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Small
Craft Advisory, which is in effect from 4 PM this afternoon to
4 AM EST Thursday.

* WINDS...North to northeast 25 to 30 knots with frequent gusts to
gale force through late this afternoon, diminishing to 20 to 25
knots tonight, then becoming northwest on Wednesday.

* WAVES/SEAS...Seas up to around 15 feet in the Gulf Stream only
slowly subsiding to 6 to 9 feet on Thursday.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Gale Warning means winds of 34 to 47 knots are imminent or
occurring. Operating a vessel in gale conditions requires
experience and properly equipped vessels. It is highly
recommended that mariners without the proper experience seek safe
harbor prior to the onset of gale conditions.

A Small Craft Advisory means that wind speeds of 20 to 33 knots
are expected to produce hazardous wave conditions to small craft.
Inexperienced mariners...especially those operating smaller
vessels should avoid navigating in these conditions.

update.......Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Jacksonville FL
855 AM EST Tue Jan 2 2018

.UPDATE...Will allow different advisories in effect until 10 am-
Noon to expire. Expecting mostly cloudy skies S of I-10 corridor
with some partial insolation north. Latest consensus temperature
guidance support current high temp forecast for Today. Will
maintain wind advisory coastal ne FL counties where seeing
30-35 mph gusts.

Did not adjust current Winter Storm Watch...although considered
addding Duval...Union, Bradford given threat to western portion
of those counties. To prevent risk of flip flop...decided to
defer to afternoon when warning/ advisory decisions will be made
based on latest guidance. Will be a very difficult decision given
a climatologically rare threat with potentially significant impact
for our area, and a shallow cold air pattern our model guidance
tends to do poorly with.

Not something you see often up in these parts........

...SIGNIFICANT SNOW AND ICE ACCUMULATIONS EXPECTED ON WEDNESDAY...
...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FOR SOUTHEAST GEORGIA AND
PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST FLORIDA...
...WINTER WEATHER ADVISORY IN EFFECT FOR PORTIONS OF NORTHEAST
FLORIDA...

.NEAR TERM /Through Wednesday/...
12z Models have come into better agreement, increasing confidence
of a significant winter weather event for large part of our
forecast area during the next 24 hours...especially given mostly
clear skies expected NW half of area leading to radiational
cooling along with low surface dew points. GFS now agreeing with
NAM in showing area of precip to develop across northeast Gulf of
Mexico after Midnight, quickly spreading/developing E and NE.
Guidance suggest precipitation will be wet snow or sleet
westernmost counties... and freezing rain/sleet Gilchrist Co to
Lake City to Jesup. Further east...more problematic given
uncertainty of how cold temps will be and how low dew points will
be (to promote evaporative cooling). Our expectation is for rain
possibly changing to freezing rain as temps cool to freezing from
W of Gainesville to just W of JAX to BQK toward dawn. East of this
line...expectation is for a cold rain with surface temps cooling
to 33-35 Immediate coast of se GA to downtown JAX to
Gainesville...with temps a little warmer SE of this line thus more
likely just a cold rain there.

Wednesday...any sleet changing to all snow western half of se
GA... freezing rain changing to snow in afternoon eastern
half... freezing rain/sleet ending as snow western counties along
I-10 corridor...cold rain further S and E...possibly ending as
flurries along I-10 corridor JAX area. Current expectation is 2-4
inch snowfall western half of se GA, 0.1-0.4 inch ice accum ending
with flurries I-10 corridor W of JAX...rain possibly some
freezing rain early JAX/GNV areas, possibly ending as flurries
along I-10 corridor to JAX.

Have upgraded to Winter Storm Warning N and W of line from GNV-JAX...
with small Winter Weather Advisory area to include KJAX and KGNV
for potential brief period of freezing rain that could cause
problems on bridges/overpasses. Significant icing leading to
downed tree limbs and power lines and dangerous travel conditions
expected particularly over the eastern half of the winter storm
warning area. Travel is strongly discouraged across se GA and I-10
corridor west of JAX on Wed.

With clouds, precip, and in cold air advection pattern, temperatures
likely to go up no more than a degree or two during the day Wed...so
high temp forecast is below guidance.

THURSDAY...
...WINTER STORM WARNING IN EFFECT FROM 4 AM TO 5 PM EST
WEDNESDAY...

* WHAT...Heavy mixed precipitation expected. Very cold wind
chills expected. Power outages and tree damage are likely due
to the ice. Travel will be dangerous and nearly impossible,
including during the morning commute on Wednesday. Total snow
accumulations of up to 3 inches and ice accumulations of one
tenth to one half of an inch are expected. Expect wind chills
to range from 30 above zero to 10 above zero.

* ADDITIONAL DETAILS...Look for significant reductions in
visibility at times. The cold wind chills will cause frostbite
in as little as 30 minutes to exposed skin.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A Winter Storm Warning means significant amounts of snow, sleet
and ice are expected. This will make travel very hazardous or
impossible. The latest road conditions for the state you are
calling from can be obtained by calling 5 1 1.

A Wind Chill Advisory means that cold air and the wind will
combine to create low wind chills. Frost bite and hypothermia can
occur if precautions are not taken. Make sure you wear a hat and
gloves.

...Temperatures Dropping to Near Freezing Thursday and Friday in
Portions of South Florida for Thursday and Friday...

Cold air will move in later this week, as a developing low
pressure system over the Straits of Florida pushes a stalled cold
front further away from the area on Wednesday.

Glades and Hendry counties may see near, or possibly below
freezing temperatures both Thursday and Friday mornings. Friday
morning looks to be the coldest, with localized areas possibly
seeing lows in the upper 20s. Even if the temperature is able to
remain just above freezing, frost is a possibility.

Wind chill values will also be low, with Glades County possibly
seeing wind chill values in the mid 20s, and Hendry County seeing
values in the upper 20s to around 30. Friday morning may see even
colder values, possibly into the low 20s.

For Palm Beach County, lows Thursday may drop into the mid to
upper 30s in the interior areas. This will bring the possibility
of frost, mainly in sheltered areas Thursday morning. For Friday
morning, the wind is forecast to be near calm, which would allow
for low to be colder, dropping to around 30, especially south of
Lake Okeechobee. So, there is a chance of seeing freezing
temperatures in some areas, and areas of frost for the interior
portions of Palm Beach County. Metro Palm Beach County is forecast
to see lows in the upper 30s to low 40s.

Wind chill values for interior Palm Beach County may drop into
the mid to upper 20s in the interior areas on Thursday and
Friday. Wind chill values for the metro areas of Palm Beach County
are forecast to be in the low to mid 30s each day.

Collier County will vary greatly from the interior to the coastal
areas. Areas in the northern interior, including the Immokalee
area may see lows Thursday in the mid 30s and low 30s on Friday.
For the areas of coastal Collier County, lows are forecast in the
mid to low 40s on Thursday and upper 30s to low 40s on Friday,
with the warmer temperatures being near the coastline.

Wind chill values will be lowest in the northern interior areas,
with the Immokalee area seeing wind chill values around 30 on
Thursday morning and mid 20s on Friday morning. The coastal metro
area are forecast to see wind chill values in the mid to upper 30s
Thursday morning, and low to mid 30s Friday morning.

The remainder of South Florida, including Broward, Miami-Dade,
and mainland Monroe counties, is forecast to see lows dipping into
the low to mid 40s, with the warmer temperatures near the coasts.
Localized areas that typically see cooler temperatures, such as
Redland in Miami-Dade County, have a chance to see frost Friday
morning.

Wind chill values for the rest of South Florida are currently
forecast to run in the 30`s both Thursday and Friday morning,
except possible values in the low 40s along the Atlantic coastal
communities of Miami-Dade County.

Morning All,
Well no wintery weather to warm only down to 39 this am.
The ride into work was a bit crazy. Has not rain this heavy for awhile so roads were slick with oil. Saw 2 accidents on way in this morning.
Stay warm next few days. Looks like mid 20's for next 3 mornings up my way.
Have a great day!!!

Post by LargoFL on Wed Jan 03, 2018 8:08 am

IMPORTANT-EAST COAST FLORIDA FOLKS...NWS Melbourne...................Wed Jan 3 2018

THIS HAZARDOUS WEATHER OUTLOOK IS FOR EAST CENTRAL FLORIDA.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT.

.THUNDERSTORM IMPACT...
A vigorous upper level system will move across the Florida
peninsula today and induce surface low pressure development off of
the southeast Florida coast. This low pressure will begin to move
northward quickly parallel to the east Florida coast and
strengthen rapidly. Conditions may become favorable for isolated
lightning storm development over the coastal waters this morning
and early afternoon, mainly over the Gulf Stream. Occasionally
lightning, gusty winds, torrential downpours, and small hail will
be the main threats as cell movement will be rapidly toward the
northeast.

.COASTAL FLOOD IMPACT...
A combination of breezy onshore winds, large breaking waves of 5 to
8 feet, and high astronomical tides will lead to additional beach
erosion around the time of high tide this morning and again this
evening. Given the prolonged nature of the event, moderate beach
erosion and some damage to dunes is possible, especially in more
vulnerable locations.

.EXCESSIVE COLD IMPACT...
Freezing temperatures are becoming increasingly likely late
overnight into early Thursday morning, especially over rural and
inland locations of east central Florida. Lowest wind chills after
midnight into early Thursday morning are expected between 24 and
29 degrees over much of the area.

No frozen precip at my house this am. Just a beautiful 33 degrees out with a hard rain. Seems I am about 30 miles south of the line between getting slammed with freezing rain and just a cold rain. Radar shows the freezing rain is now switching over to snow. May have to drive up to Cross City to see some of the snow.

Post by LargoFL on Wed Jan 03, 2018 11:46 am

yes NWs Melbourne starting to mention it...........................1105 AM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

...COASTAL FLOOD ADVISORY IN EFFECT UNTIL 5 AM EST THURSDAY...
...HIGH SURF ADVISORY REMAINS IN EFFECT UNTIL 4 AM EST THURSDAY...

The National Weather Service in Melbourne has issued a Coastal
Flood Advisory, which is in effect until 5 AM EST Thursday. The
Coastal Flood Watch is no longer in effect.

* COASTAL FLOODING...A prolonged period of high surf is causing
moderate beach erosion. Considerations for the cumulative
effects has brought a concern for damage to dunes, and expected
to become significant in spots.

* Waves and Surf...Seas 10 to 13 feet in the offshore Atlantic
will produce breaking waves of 5 to 7 feet in the surf zone.

* TIMING...Continuing through late tonight, and accentuated at
times of high tide.

* IMPACTS...Breaking waves will cause rough surf making it
extremely unpleasant for beachgoers, and very hazardous if
entering the surf. Rough surf can easily knock down those wading
through surf waters. Swimmers are highly discouraged from
entering the water due to strong rip currents. Rip currents will
become very strong near structures in the water such as piers,
jetties and reefs. Additional significant beach erosion will be
possible, particularly near the times of high tide.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

A High Surf Advisory means that high surf will affect beaches in
the advisory area...producing localized beach erosion and
dangerous swimming conditions.

A Coastal Flood Advisory indicates that onshore winds and tides
will combine to generate flooding of low areas along the shore.

on the South Florida waters. A Small Craft Advisory is in effect.

Thunderstorms: Isolated thunderstorms are possible on Atlantic waters
this afternoon. Lightning is the primary threat.

Temperatures: Temperatures below freezing are possible in Glades
County tonight, where a Freeze Warning is in effect. Wind chill
values in the mid 20s to the mid 30s are expected over inland
portions of Southern Florida late tonight and early Wednesday

(clipped) NWS Melbourne...........As cold air filters in, ECFL should make preparations for the
coldest air this season. Confidence is high for phase one of a mult-
morning freeze event. Consequently, the Freeze Watch has been
upgraded to a Freeze Warning beginning at 3AM. Min temps will drop
into the upper 20s and lower 30s over much of area. The current
Wind Chill Advisory still looks in good order, along with
advisories at the beaches. However, the Coastal Flood Watch has
been upgraded to a Coastal Flood Advisory due to mutiple reports
of prevailing moderate beach erosion, with locally significant
erosion taking place in spots.

Thus, focus for this package will be on afternoon PoP adjustments
and durational freeze concerns overnight. The immediate Space and
Treasure coasts (E of I-95) should stay AOA 32 degrees, along
with much of Martin County. However, some locations over the
interior may see freeze durations of 4-6 hours within rural
locations north and west of the I-4 corridor.

into the upper 20s to lower 30s across much of east central
Florida. Duration of freezing temperatures will be between 4
to 6 hours over rural areas near and north of Interstate 4.
Duration of freezing temperatures elsewhere will be between 2
to 4 hours. Temperatures at or below freezing can kill
sensitive vegetation and may freeze exposed water pipes.

* IMPACTS...Portable plants may need to be brought indoors to a
warmer location, or considering covering sensitive vegetation
as needed. Small animals should be adequately cared for, or
brought indoors if needed.

PRECAUTIONARY/PREPAREDNESS ACTIONS...

Also...many home fires occur during cold weather episodes. Use
extreme caution with space heaters...keeping the heater away from
all material that may be combustible...such as pillows...blankets

Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe

Post by LargoFL on Wed Jan 03, 2018 12:18 pm

(clipped from a red cross site)..................Why Pipe Freezing is a Problem
Water has a unique property in that it expands as it freezes. This expansion puts tremendous pressure on whatever is containing it, including metal or plastic pipes. No matter the strength of a container, expanding water can cause pipes to break.
Pipes that freeze most frequently are:
Pipes that are exposed to severe cold, like outdoor hose bibs, swimming pool supply lines, and water sprinkler lines.
Water supply pipes in unheated interior areas like basements and crawl spaces, attics, garages, or kitchen cabinets.
Pipes that run against exterior walls that have little or no insulation.
How to Protect Pipes From Freezing
Before the onset of cold weather, protect your pipes from freezing by following these recommendations:
Drain water from swimming pool and water sprinkler supply lines following manufacturer's or installer's directions. Do not put antifreeze in these lines unless directed. Antifreeze is environmentally harmful, and is dangerous to humans, pets, wildlife, and landscaping.
Remove, drain, and store hoses used outdoors. Close inside valves supplying outdoor hose bibs. Open the outside hose bibs to allow water to drain. Keep the outside valve open so that any water remaining in the pipe can expand without causing the pipe to break.
Add insulation to attics, basements and crawl spaces. Insulation will maintain higher temperatures in these areas.
Check around the home for other areas where water supply lines are located in unheated areas. Look in the garage, and under kitchen and bathroom cabinets. Both hot and cold water pipes in these areas should be insulated.
Consider installing specific products made to insulate water pipes like a "pipe sleeve" or installing UL-listed "heat tape," "heat cable," or similar materials on exposed water pipes. Newspaper can provide some degree of insulation and protection to exposed pipes – even ¼” of newspaper can provide significant protection in areas that usually do not have frequent or prolonged temperatures below freezing.
Consider relocating exposed pipes to provide increased protection from freezing.
How to Prevent Frozen Pipes
Keep garage doors closed if there are water supply lines in the garage.
Open kitchen and bathroom cabinet doors to allow warmer air to circulate around the plumbing. Be sure to move any harmful cleaners and household chemicals up out of the reach of children.
When the weather is very cold outside, let the cold water drip from the faucet served by exposed pipes. Running water through the pipe - even at a trickle - helps prevent pipes from freezing.
Keep the thermostat set to the same temperature both during the day and at night. By temporarily suspending the use of lower nighttime temperatures, you may incur a higher heating bill, but you can prevent a much more costly repair job if pipes freeze and burst.
If you will be going away during cold weather, leave the heat on in your home, set to a temperature no lower than 55° F.
How to Thaw Frozen Pipes
If you turn on a faucet and only a trickle comes out, suspect a frozen pipe. Likely places for frozen pipes include against exterior walls or where your water service enters your home through the foundation.
Keep the faucet open. As you treat the frozen pipe and the frozen area begins to melt, water will begin to flow through the frozen area. Running water through the pipe will help melt ice in the pipe.
Apply heat to the section of pipe using an electric heating pad wrapped around the pipe, an electric hair dryer, a portable space heater (kept away from flammable materials), or by wrapping pipes with towels soaked in hot water. Do not use a blowtorch, kerosene or propane heater, charcoal stove, or other open flame device.
Apply heat until full water pressure is restored. If you are unable to locate the frozen area, if the frozen area is not accessible, or if you can not thaw the pipe, call a licensed plumber.
Check all other faucets in your home to find out if you have additional frozen pipes. If one pipe freezes, others may freeze, too.
Be Prepared for Winter Weather

I did end up with some freezing rain this morning, but it was confined to the tops of tall pine trees. I didn't see any on the ground or other surfaces. It doesn't feel that bad now that the sun is out. Ended up with 1 inch of rainfall. Wish it would have been snow. We were close, but the atmosphere overhead had a warm layer. Now we will have a hard freeze the next several nights.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
314 PM EST Wed Jan 3 2018

.SHORT TERM (Today-Thursday)...
Mid/upper level troughing will remain over the eastern U.S. with a
rapidly deepening area of low pressure moving up the eastern
seaboard away from the region. Behind this system high pressure will
build in from the north central states with breezy northwest to
north winds ushering another shot of cold dry air. For tonight the
flow will remain northwest enough to see some stratocumulus over the
eastern gulf move onshore affecting coastal areas from around Tampa
Bay southward for much of the night and also help keep temperatures
from falling as much here. Meanwhile inland and northern areas will
clear out and this will set the area up for an advection freeze for
the Nature Coast southward over the interior counties. Temperatures
are expected to bottom out in the mid to upper 20s across much of
the Nature Coast and a Hard Freeze Warning will be issued for Levy,
Citrus, Inland Hernando, and Sumter counties, with the remaining
Freeze Watch area being upgraded to a Freeze Warning. The Wind Chill
Advisory will also remain in effect for tonight. On Thursday we`ll
see mainly sunny skies and the rather cool temperatures persisting
with highs ranging from the upper 40s far north to around 60 south.
