2-11-18 Florida/Alabama Blog - Has Spring Sprung?

Post by StAugustineFL on Sun Feb 11, 2018 6:36 am

Spring may have sprung for the far southeast if the latest GFS is correct. I'm seeing many periods of below normal temperatures for many parts of the country but nothing of significance impacting the far southeastern USA through the end of the month. Might be time to sew seeds if anyone plants spring gardens. We will watch, wait, and see!

Agree Aug, as much as I wish we could participate in the below normal temps, I'm not seeing anything so far to indicate that JB may be right.

The Euro ensembles have me fairly warm through the 25th....

I am glad the front didn't stall down here. That is too much rain for this time of year when the trees and plants are dormant. Anyway, I watched JB's Saturday update and he still feels Winter is coming back to the SE US, and he has many reasons to feel this way. He predicts the models will start to back off on predicting more warmth much like they did back in December and by the end of Feb we will be at least normal if not below normal temp wise and that should last thru March. I for one sure hope he is right as it was hot this weekend and I am not ready for summer just yet.

Morning All,
I too saw what JB had to say and a local weatherperson said they see a pattern change coming next week to back to aleast normal temps.
Any body notice all the leaves that fell off the trees over the weekend?
Yesterday I had a high of 86.7 and a heat index of 90.3 NUTS!!
Have a great day!!

Wow. Some of the forestry district rainfall readings in the western panhandle are approaching 20" of rainfall so far for the month of February. I guess the drought is over there.

From Ruskin's FB page....

US National Weather Service Tampa Bay Florida
26 mins ·
We will probably not reach the record high of 87° degrees in Tampa today, but if the temperature doesn't fall below this mornings low of 72° before midnight we will set a New Record High Minimum for the Day and the Month! The current record high minimum for today is 68° set in 1994, while the record high minimum for the month of February is 71° set back on February 10, 1949. Also, the low of 72° is actually what we expect the high temperature to be today based on the 1981-2010 30-year average temperatures.

Just in the last 48 hours I saw some CoCoRaHS obs over 12" in the west central panhandle. Too much of a good thing but seems a much drier period cometh for the folks there.

Hope Largo is ok and only got lost finding the new page although he did post once yesterday. Unlike him to be gone.

It is a bit worrisome. Just had a weather friend pass away last Friday so I find myself thinking the worse if folks immediately disappear. Sad If you click on "memberlist" at the top center of the screen it shows when folks were last on the site. He's been gone since noonish on Sunday.

Weatherwise it was chilly here today. The temps dropped around 10 degrees during the day with a chilly 57 as of this post. Had .43" of rain in the wee hours of the morning. Been cloudy/foggy/drizzly. Highs near 70 tomorrow then 80 on Thursday.

Too early for that bills! Another cloudy/cool day here with temps in the low 60's but the clouds have cleared an hour ago which should warm things up a few degrees before sunset.

I see some idiot in Broward County decided to fire shots in high school. Wonder if he was rejected by a woman being as it is Valentine's Day.

Hey y'all.... wish we would hear from Largo, it is definitely worrisome for him to not have been online all week.

I've been watching live coverage of the school shooting. They took the "suspect" to the hospital, but he appeared to not have any injuries.

I saw a post yesterday about the Euro temps and dammit, I want nothing to do with that!!!

Good afternoon. It was a pleasant 80'ish here today after a cool morning. House cooled to 68 and I had long sleeves on. Now up to 76 indoors as the sun is close to setting.

4 day weekend is under way. Lot's of chores to knock out. I did have palms trimmed and screen panels replaced the past 2 days. Now I need to put in my own work.

Found this on Kamala. It's the forecast for SFL for the next 7 days. Generally highs of 80-85 through the period. No 90's!

My hours generally vary from 6AM to 6PM with the occasional after hours gig where I may have to work overnight.

Just checked the GFS 2 meter air temps through the latest model run. Looks like highs generally in the 80's with lows in the 60's through month end for the majority of the state. Early March hints at highs in the 50's/60's with lows in the 40's/50's.

On a side note - does anyone know of a natural armadillo repellent? I have a little fellow taking refuge under some shrubbery near my AC unit making a mess every couple of weeks. I just saw him/her scooting across the lawn to the shrubs. I can ask my friend Google but thought I would inquire here first.

The only repellent I have found that works is a .22 LR to the head. Had to do that last week with one tearing up my yard.

Come on, Early March!

Armadillo's are attracted by the sub-surface bugs in your (or neighbors') yard. You (and your neighbors) get rid of those, and the armadillo should go away.

Otherwise, pack and fill their hole including a hand-full of moth balls. You may have to deal with the smell for a few months, but that's small potatoes compared to your yard being ripped up. I've used this method twice, and it worked both times. They could have several holes in the area. I like WD's solution as well, but that doesn't work as well in highly urban Pinellas Co.

Been really busy here. Taking on more at work Sad.

It is disconcerting that we haven't heard from Largo this week. I might have to go stalk his park in the wee-hours.

I like WD's proposal as well but like you JR I don't think the neighbors, or the popo, would approve. I tried putting some hot pepper in the hole a couple of weeks ago then filled it in. The sun-of-a-gun dug a new hole. The yard is fine but mounds of dirt abound beneath the shrubbery. I had about 18" worth butted up against my AC unit the last go round.

I will try mothballs. My grandfather had them in his closets. I liked the smell to be honest.

Not to be morbid but I checked Largo recent obituaries this morning. I believe he is late 60's. Nothing matched so that's a good sign. Maybe computer problems???

Nothing morbid about that stAug. I'm not sure how young Largo is but that also crossed my mind. On the Armadillo's I have a 410 with rat shot and it works great!!

I love that John!! I used to have a 410 and now dad has my 410 over-under since I have no where to shoot it here.

Yes, BillsFan. I used to commute thru the area. There's also a 2nd larger park nearby as well. I've heard him mention that for walks too, but it crosses a pretty busy road to get there.

I will try mothballs.  My grandfather had them in his closets.  I liked the smell to be honest.

Not to be morbid but I checked Largo recent obituaries this morning.   I believe he is late 60's.  Nothing matched so that's a good sign.  Maybe computer problems???

Any large mounds near concrete or foundation, probably means they dug under. Small mounds of dirt (a few inches wide) is their snout diggin' for the bugs.
Keep up the good fight!!!

The hole leading to that last debris mound was about 3' away smack dab in the center of my shrubbery. I filled it back in. Maybe I should put up a scarearmadillo in lieu of a scarecrow. Smile

Typical morning as of late here - clouds and fog. Come 9-10 the sun will burst out making for a pleasant day.
