Good afternoon. Dry and quite warm here too. Typical Florida weather. I think the Jags had their hottest football game on record this past Sunday with temps in the high 90's with a heat index around 110. Cooler weather is just around the corner.

Morning All,
Really not much going on around these parts. I agree with San I hear thunder almost every day but always going the other way. I've had no rain in while.
North and south Carolina sure is a mess. My heart goes out to those people.
I will be on Vacation next week just so you know.
Have a great day!!!!!!

Well, my work network is keeping me from seeing San's link, so I'll have to check it later. Donna was a few months before I was born, but just a month or so after my parents moved to Jax (from W.Tx, so this was their first hurricane). Dad's (navy) ship went out to sea; Mom huddled with new neighbors. They were unimpressed Wink -- coming in from Tornado Alley! (and only a Cat 1 at the time)

Thanks for the link.  The Labor Day storm and Donna both avoided Cuba and hit the Keys directly as Cat 4 & 5 storms.  Shows how important the mountains of Cuba are to south Florida

CLOSED Tropical Season heats up for Florida/Alabama - Page 8 Empty Re: CLOSED Tropical Season heats up for Florida/Alabama

That is a cool link on hurricanes in the keys. I love looking up historical accounts of storms that impacted FL. Makes me laugh that each time a storm hits all the media wants to talk about is how it is a product of man-made climate change. The truth is hurricanes have always been a part of the climate in the SE US and they will continue to be so into the future. Each storm is different and all you have to do is study historical tracks and impacts to see they were just as bad (often worse) with extreme winds, huge storm surges and "Biblical" amounts of rain way back in history as they are today.

I am now at 5 days without rainfall. However, the humidity won't let up and this has been the hottest stretch of weather we have had all summer. Models are trying to hint at a storm/hurricane coming northward out of the NW Carribbean impacting somewhere in the SE US then curving out to sea. It appears a front will be moving in about the time the storm will potentially impact the US and behind the storm the front will usher in Fall. Wilma comes to mind with this type of set up. The strong front moved through north FL and it was beautiful, crisp fall weather here in Levy County while Wilma was slashing S FL. Hope nothing of Wilma's strength ends up anywhere near the US, but it would be nice for a storm to from and re-curve out to sea and bring us some nice fall temps.

Good point WD! Some of strongest, most destructive storms happened, decades, even a century or two ago.

Gosh, it was gorgeous after Wilma. (the whole winter was as I recall)

I think this is a sub-tropical low that is possibly going to develop from some of the left over energy from Florence and the front Florence got tangled up in. Looks like it will most likely impact the Carolinas with rainfall. Just what they need.

Have a nice vacation John!

I've enjoyed the stories y'all have told about some of those hurricanes.  I didn't move to FL until 2005 so I only have "recent" experience.  I did enjoy reading about those in the link though!

It is just too damn hot here right now!  I could deal with the horrible 90+ temp if the overnight lows would dip just a little bit.  Instead of Nov/Dec, I'm now rooting for Jan/Feb!!!

Morning All,
Just hot and humid again 94 with a feels like 111 yesterday. Heard lots of thunder but no rain.
I agree with all of yous, Hurricanes come in many sizes and they were bad 50yrs ago and will be bad in the future. We now have the means to get out of there way so the deaths with these storms could be lower. There are still a lot of people that think they can drive threw high water....Don't get that!!!!!
Have a nice day!!

I could just see some cloud tops in the distance, but heard a rumble. I guess that means I got a thunderstorm yesterday as well. About like that all week. Thunderstorms every day, but not a drop of rain.

You missed out on all of the fun in 2004, San??? That was a year to remember in C-FL.

I have been through a ton of tropical storms (29, if I can include the No-Name Storm), including some of the big ones: Camille (69), David (79), Floyd (99), but I cannot say that I have ever experienced more than Cat-2 winds (maybe not even Cat-2). So I feel very lucky on this front. One day, I'm afraid, it'll catch up to me. Wink

After Charley I was informed by my insurance company that they had NOT cashed my homeowners check. I then had to sit through Frances and Jeanne knowing that.

Yikes, StPete. Jeanne came in pretty close, too. She took a few of my shingles. For me after Charlie, it was Ivan that had me truly scared. He was tracking our way at one point, I remember, as a Cat-4/5.

oh gosh, 2004 Rolling Eyes

We lost power so many times that summer/fall. We even got a feeder band from Charley that felled a power line onto my neighbor's shed catching it on fire!

Lost power for days with Frances and Jeanne and they were nearly 200 miles north of me. The original prediction for Ivan was that he was supposed to be a monster cat 5 and head N from Cuba and go up the middle of the state. (thank goodness that didn't happen, bad enough what he did to Panhandle) Millions of people were so stressed out, every week it was a new threat. Our hurricane boards went up before Frances and stayed up until the end of hurricane season.

I moved here in 1983 and I don't think we had any storms until Andrew (92)....

And I thought C-FL had it bad, Bills. Tampa Bay area got off real easy that year, but both Charlie and Ivan had us in their sights, but missed completely. Francis and Jeanne were glancing blows from a TS and maybe Cat-1.
I had a job interview, in Orlando, the Monday after Jeanne went through, and driving into town on Sunday actually brought tears to my eyes. Debris everywhere, blue tarps going on forever, burn piles all over. That evening I helped a buddy un-board his house and 2 neighbors, no a/c overnight, and a cold shower in the morning. (But I got the job!!)

The agent said she misplaced the check. Then when she found it there was a named storm in the Atlantic (Charley), since it was a new policy they couldn't issue coverage. And then it was one storm after another. There was a two day window between Danielle and Frances where I guess she "misplaced" the check again, then Frances, Ivan, and Jeanne. Needless to say I got another agent.

But, no major storm damage here. We lost power for Frances, Charley was supposed to hit here but went south at the last minute. Still, quite a stressful year.

Well actually CFL did get it much, much worse than we did, but considering how far we are away, it's astonishing the amount of time that we didn't have electricity.

Great story JR! Is that your current job?

oh, ST Pete, how stressful, that seems like it should be illegal!   Very stressful year, and 2005 wasn't much better!  We got Katrina as a barely Cat 1 hurricane (which the local forecasters and government  BADLY botched forecasting Katrina).... and then Wilma, which was the strongest hurricane that I've been through.  And then after that, we got all the way up to Gamma?  Not sure of the last one that season.

Not the current job, BillsFan. Bounced around a bit after being unemployed for a year and a half (2003-04). After a few years in Orlando, 4 years road-warrior consulting (Jax, Phoenix, Mizzou, Lakeland - 1 year each); then current job here in Tampa. Been here 8 years. <5 to go!

Good afternoon. "Enjoyed" everyone's storm experiences. Mid 2000's were bad for sure then all the scares/impacts before and since as noted in the comments. So far so good for FL this year. Hope that holds for the next few weeks.

Been dry here for a week or so but did have a "storm" yesterday that dropped .38. Hope all are well.
