Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
258 PM EDT Thu May 2 2019
.DISCUSSION...
A broad mid level low with a weak surface trough is sliding north
along the FL east coast this afternoon. These two features begins
to trek out over the Atlantic Fri as a long wave trough from
Canada to Mexico moves east...toward the Mississippi Valley.
Atlantic high pressure slowly builds into the Gulf of Mexico with
an axis through south FL by Fri afternoon.
Deep moisture from the east coastal features continue across the area
into the evening...with model PWAT values approaching 2 inches. This
moisture along with limited daytime heating will support high rain
chances along with a few thunderstorms into the evening. Then
with the loss of daytime heating and the slow departure of the
deep moisture the rain chances will be on the decrease. Some
residual moisture along with slightly more daytime heating Fri
will result in mainly afternoon scattered showers/storms. Inland
locations will be favored as southwesterly low level flow sets up.
For Sat through next Thu: The long wave trough noted above tracks
to the eastern U.S. Sun with a diffuse front moving into north
FL...shifting the high pressure across the state southward. The
longwave trough exits to the Atlantic Mon...allowing ridging both
surface and aloft to build over the area. The front slowly dissipates.
The atmosphere will remain moist enough for scattered showers/storms
mainly in the afternoons and evenings...although the front Sun
may enhance coverage. Temperatures run on the warm side of normal.

Cool to watch the PWAT loop St Pete.
Had a few brief showers here today. 3 rounds worth with .1" in the gauge. I don't see this term used nowadays but the skies are "variably cloudy". Mostly sunshine one hour, cloudy the next. It's trended more cloudy overall through the day.

An upper high and surface high pressure near Bermuda and associated
ridging extends north through New England. Closer to Florida, a weak
tropical wave east of Florida moves north over the next 24 hours.
This is producing increased rain chances over the east coast of
Florida, but is not expected to produce any significant weather over
our area. As this low lifts north, weak high pressure builds in over
the area producing relatively quiet weather over the next several
days. Mid/upper level troughing moves east on Sunday lending support
to an area of low pressure moving through the mid-Atlantic region.
The associated frontal boundary extends southwest and will bring us
our highest chances of rain on Sunday. High pressure builds back in
by late Monday, bringing an easterly flow back which will support
showers/storms developing over the east coast and moving westward
through the afternoon each day. Temperatures will remain around
seasonal average through the weekend and into next week.

Re: April-May Florida weather and local events etc
Where did Spring go? Yesterday felt very much like the middle of summer and the storms fed off the heat and humidity. Had 3 rounds come through here, but somehow they just brushed me. I ended up with just over .10" total. However, 1.5" fell at work in Cedar Key. Also had a pretty good amount of lightning from the storms.
The forecast for today is calling for much of the same: heat, humidity and a good chance of afternoon storms.
It is beginning to appear that for the second year in a row, the rainy season has started a good 3-4 weeks early. This is just my opininon, but it looks like we will end up another wet Summer with localized flooding throughout the state.

...Hot With Afternoon Storms...
A very warm and humid southwest wind flow will push afternoon
temperatures into the upper 80s and lower 90s across east central
Florida today. Expect fast moving afternoon showers and lightning
storms to form along and ahead of the west coast sea breeze.
Storms will move toward the east-northeast at 25 to 30 MPH, first
impacting areas from Lake County eastward through the I-4 corridor
including greater Daytona Beach, Sanford, Orlando and Kissimmee-
Saint Cloud between 1 and 4 PM, Storms will affect the Space and
Treasure Coasts between 3 and 7 PM.
Strong wind gusts of 40 to 50 MPH, torrential downpours, and
frequent lightning can be expected with today`s storms. Boaters
should also be on the lookout for storms approaching rapidly from
the west, as they will produce locally higher winds and seas as
they push across the Intracoastal Waterway and near shore Atlantic
during the late afternoon and early evening.
At the central Florida Atlantic beaches, there will be a moderate
risk for dangerous Rip Currents today. The threat will be highest
between 1100 AM and 530 PM. Always swim near a lifeguard and never
swim alone.

Good morning. Add .33" to the gauge yesterday for a 2 day "disturbance" total of .59". As WD and St Pete alluded to, seems we may be getting into a summertime pattern. Some days it rains, some days it doesn't. Glad to see some chances in the days ahead.
If ya'll are a believer in the Jim Lushine theory, hope south Florida has a wet May.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
309 AM EDT Sun May 5 2019
.DISCUSSION...
A mid/upper-level trough continues to move through the Mississippi
River Valley region early this morning, keeping a west-southwest
flow in place aloft over Florida. At the surface, low pressure and
an associated cold front are moving over the southeast. Surface high
pressure centered over the western Atlantic is also stretched across
southern Florida. A line of showers and thunderstorms is moving
toward the Nature Coast and should impact these areas later this
morning.
Sunday is not expected to be a washout by any means, but rain
chances are on the high side due to both the proximity of the cold
front and the sea breeze. First, the surface low mentioned above
will move quickly to the northeast through the rest of the day, with
the cold front moving into northern Florida. Then we have the
position of the high pressure ridge axis over south Florida, which
leads to a southwest to west flow across the local area. In turn,
this will push the sea breeze quickly inland, so while showers and
some thunderstorms will be possible over toward the Gulf, most of
the activity will consolidate away from the coast as we head into
the evening hours. Cloud cover and rain might keep highs down just a
bit, but it will still be a warm and humid day overall.
For Monday, the weakening cold front is actually forecast to drop
southward across the peninsula before it dissipates. We should also
see a similar sea breeze setup, pushing most activity inland through
the afternoon.
Ridging builds in aloft for the rest of the week with surface high
pressure centered to our northeast. Sea breeze showers and
thunderstorms can be expected each day with hot and humid conditions
continuing.

Good afternoon. Decent thunderstorm winding down here now. No wind but heavy rain for a spell and quite a bit of thunder/lightning.

Wow. The warning here was right on. Straight line blinding rain. Literally. Turned a corner almost home in the hood, 5-10mph, windshield became a wall of water. Nothing to do except stop for 15 seconds for the wipers to start working again. More than just minor debris. 1/3 inch in < 10 mins, and neither of my guages would catch straight line from the SW-W.

I've always wondered about the gauges collecting rain when blowing horizontally. Irma most recently comes to mind. Had 13.24" in 24 hours but how much was potentially missed?

Agreed, Aug. I think that the only way to be 100% accurate would be to have a guage that floats with the rain direction, with zero interference. I don't know if that even exists.

How 'bout that plane, Aug? Personally glad that any issue was at final landing. Parents are about 2 miles away from the plane. I was a teen sailing and fishing these waters.

Morning. Gauge tally was 1.39"
Yeah JR - had to be a scare for the passengers. Looked odd watching the morning news Saturday and seeing a plane in the water on the aerial webcam. Glad all were ok.
I too hope bills is ok. Last I heard was she was battling a serious medical issue.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
323 AM EDT Mon May 6 2019
.DISCUSSION...
Water vapor imagery early this morning shows broad troughing over
the region, with shortwave energy moving through the central Gulf of
Mexico. At the surface, low pressure has moved off the eastern
seaboard, with a cold front trailing into the Florida peninsula. The
Atlantic high pressure ridge axis has been shunted south of the
state. Latest radar imagery shows an area of convection moving over
the eastern Gulf of Mexico, but these have not made much progress
toward land areas.
For the rest of today, the shortwave mentioned above will make its
way toward the Florida peninsula, with another round of showers and
thunderstorms expected, though these are not expected to be as
strong or widespread as those from Sunday. As the shortwave passes
to our east and the sea breeze kicks in, most activity should be
pushed inland by the afternoon and evening.
Ridging aloft builds in through the rest of the week as surface high
pressure becomes established to our northeast. Some drier air will
keep rain chances a bit lower for Tuesday and Wednesday, but chances
go back up through the end of the week and into the weekend as more
shortwave energy moves along the northern Gulf coast. Conditions
otherwise will generally remain warm and humid.

Good Monday AM. Once again the bad weather went around me, just some nice rainfall. I ended up with 0.65" in the gauge and it came from 3 distinct rounds of heavy rain that came through very fast. There was one period of some rumbling from the clouds, but overall nothing to really talk about. Looks like I don't get another shot of rain until next week as hot, dry conditions are forecast to take hold.

NWS Tampa...Area Forecast Discussion

.DISCUSSION...
Ridging aloft will build across the region through the rest of the
week with surface high pressure becoming established to our
northeast. Low-level flow will generally remain east to southeast
through the week, with the sea breeze forming along the coast each
afternoon. Some relatively drier air will keep rain chances on the
lower side for today and Wednesday, with a bit more activity
expected for Thursday and Friday.
A southwest to west low-level flow will then set up for the weekend
as a weakening frontal boundary moves into the southeast and toward
northern Florida. Still expecting scattered sea breeze showers and
thunderstorms each day, with the best chances inland. Hot and humid
conditions will continue.
