Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
That squall line ended up being the main event after all. This line had 50mph wind gusts, extreme lightning and it dropped 2" of rain in 15 minutes. Needless to say my drive home from work was exciting. The roads were all under water and I had to slow to 25 mph in 55 mph zone. The rest of the front last night brought light to periods of moderate rain. My front total is 3.90" of much needed rainfall. The current temp is 48 with a 20 mph NW wind and the sun is stuck behind the clouds making it feel very cold out. BRR. Now its time to go get the boat decorated for the parade!StAugustineFL wrote:I suspect the convection moving ashore near you WD is the appetizer to the main event based on how I view the WV loop.

Very nice on the rain. There was a sweet spot that extended from your area across the peninsula to Duval County. Hard to see on the North FL CoCoRaHS image below in terms of totals. Just follow the orange color.

Definitely can see where the heaviest thunderstorms trained across the North Central Florida Peninsula. Yesterday was a very strange weather day here. Cold and damp in the AM, warm air moved in VERY Briefly ahead of the squall, then a very cold T storm. I thought we were on the cold side and wouldn't see T storms. I was wrong on that one.

Yummy bills! Strangely I've never eaten chili. The beans were what held me back but I love everything else!
My beef stew has been slow-cooking around 6 hours. I am starving! Might have to step outdoors and eat some leaves off the trees.

Sounds good too Aug. A friend of mine from Texas says "real" chili doesn't have beans in it. I find that strange, but that's what he says.

Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
Good morning. It is a cool, crisp 35 degrees at the moment. Might drop another couple of degrees yet.
Largo - you've inquired about this a couple of times in the past. Here's your answer:
Why does it get colder just before sunrise?
The atmosphere holds in the heat of the day for some time after the sun sets. The heat gradually dissipates over the hours of the evening. By just before sunrise, the heat is gone, and the atmosphere is at its coolest. This is also the time at which the dew or frost point is most apt to be reached, and dew or frost often appears on the ground around this time. It takes a little time before the sun's rays become strong enough to begin heating the atmosphere, allowing the ground to start absorbing the heat again.
Similarly, the hottest part of the day is generally in late afternoon, not at noon when the sun is at its highest point. Although the sun's rays are most direct from late morning until mid-afternoon, the Earth holds in the heat as the day progresses. By late afternoon, the heat of the day has reached a cumulative point, and the day's highest temperature generally occurs at that time.

well the strong winds did me a favor, they took down some of the Large tree branches that busted off the trunk way up there near the top.. but was too far up for me to get them after IRMA...they came down low enough now.. that I could finally bring them down safely..thank you cold front lol

I won't lie it's cold... for us. Hubby has long John's under his PJs as he leaves for work super early and works out west where it's colder and Windier. We do not run heat unless it's in the 30-40's.
But I just find it refreshing. In small doses. It'll be fantastic with the sun tomorrow

Morning all. Â Similar conditions here to what John has. Â 30 degrees with a heavy frost on the rooftops along with a fairly heavy frost on the lawn. Â The top growth on my hibiscus, pinta, and Mexican petunia's will probably wilt and die off the next couple of days but that's expected. Â New growth always regenerates from the ground up come spring. Â The one thing I like least will be the lawn turning brown over the coming days giving a dreary look (at least to me). Â Takes a good 3 weeks for it to green back up if the temps stay warm enough.

Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
Cold frosty morning here in Levy county. I forgot to look at the thermometer this AM, but there was solid ice on the roof of the pig pen where the rain had collected and we have frost all the way up in the trees. Yesterday we had a lighter frost and only a skim of ice on the water trough. This was a nice little freeze to start the winter out. I hope we get some more freezes and even a few hard freezes this winter to knock back the bugs and the invasive plants and animals that have moved up here during the last several mild winters.

A Good Safety Tip from NWS Melbourne...............................Many home fires occur during cold weather episodes. Use caution with
space heaters by keeping the heater well away from pillows, blankets
and curtains.

I guess up in NY fall came and the temps gradually came down, like 70 then 60 then 50 and so on..but not BOOM in one day like down here..up north you had time to get used to the colder temps and your blood thickened etc and you were ready for the freezing temps.....down here you don't get that...4 days its hot..3 days it gets cold..then hot again....your body had no idea what to do....if it thickens your blood so you stay warmer..boom its hot outside and you cant take the heat etc.............so in a way..im glad winter doesn't stand much of a chance here to last for long....don't like the FLU and whatever else is coming with our weakened body defenses.

Good afternoon. Back to work today and didn't get to check the weather this morning. I'm not sure what it bottomed out at last night but low 40's was forecast so I'll go with that. Hit the low 70's today but back down to 35 tonight. No frost/freeze warnings for the area but being so close to the freezing point I'm not taking any chances and covered a few plants again. Same for tomorrow before lows climb well above 32.

still a bit early to be sure WD but so far it looks ok weather wise for Florida..but for those driving northward out of Florida to be with friends/family out of state for the holidays might want to leave a bit earlier and be checking their routes NWS forecasts.

well I guess this time my county was lucky, being surrounded by warmer waters on 3 sides , we stayed warmer than most other central and northern florida counties..so far anyway but it was and is..still cold here too..some people LIKE it being real cold..i myself like it cooler and less humid, but I don't care for it being actually cold with freezing temps..but its ok for the Christmas season I guess..gets people into the spirit and I sure know..January is coming LOL..hope no real freeze here by me this time.....one winter I almost lost everything outside in a freeze...learned a good lesson back then..you cannot cover the plants enough lol..
