Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
It's been about as cold as I like (though 1 or 2 light freezes would not be a bad thing). The last 4 mornings have been around 40, 40, 50, and 50. No frost, no freeze. I'm about 8 miles inland and a block from the bay. I haven't covered any plants for years. If something dies, it gets replaced with something more tolerable and sustainable. I do have some azaleas and blueberries to replace this year. They dried out too much earlier this year (drought + broken sprinklers).
Looks like a great weekend coming....
Christmas shopping -- what's that?!?! I have ordered the dinner meats for smoking on the 24th (wet-cured ham, boston butt (pulled pork), pork shanks) First time doing shanks.

That's cold, John. Just 30 miles west: 51 last night, 53 at 5am. That gulf breeze, over 60's water temps, sure makes a diff.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
224 PM EST Thu Dec 14 2017
.SHORT TERM (Tonight - Friday)...
A closed upper low sits over the northern Quebec with broad
troughing extending south through the western Atlantic. A more zonal
upper level pattern has set up over the Florida peninsula and will
persist through the short term period. On the surface, high pressure
has moved over southern Florida which has caused a shift in the
winds to the south-southwest. Mostly rain-free conditions can be
expected once again on Friday with a continued warming trend with
the southerly component winds over the area. With the change in on-
shore south-southwest winds, this will also allow for an increase in
moisture to be advected over west central and southwest Florida.
This increase in moisture will allow for partly cloudy skies on
Friday as well, but most of the area should stay rain-free with only
a slight chance of showers over the coastal areas.
&&
.MID TERM/LONG TERM (Friday Night - Thursday)...
Fast moving and dampening shortwave moves into the Western Atlantic
pushing mainly dry surface frontal boundary through the area Fri Nt
into Sat. Surface high pressure quickly building into the region
Saturday then into the W Atlantic Sun with no significant airmass
change to keep temps near to slightly above normal through the
weekend.
Upper ridging from the N Carib over the region and SE-S low level
flow to bring warm and humid conditions back to the area early next
week with daytime temps around 80 degrees.
Next weeks system very similar to this weekends as shortwave now
looks to dampen out as it moves through the Deep South with another
weak and mainly dry frontal boundary sliding through the area by mid
week then weak, not as warm, surface high pressure to end the
forecast period.

Good evening. Catching up on things here. Year end work rush has been a grind. On one hand it's exhausting while on the other allows opportunity to excel/impress. Such is the "white-collar" world but nothing white-collar working from home in t-shirt, shorts, and flip-flips. I'm definitely blue-collared at heart but gotta make a living.
Not sure how folks check in here but I use the old brick and mortar laptop. If the images don't fit the screen I right-click then select "open image in new tab". It does exactly that - opens an image (full sized) in a new tab, lol. May be browser dependent though. I also have the imgur add-on where I can also right-click and "rehost image"

I normally check in on my Kindle. I can usually see everything.
Although chilly I so much prefer this over 100 degree deal like temps.
And yikes Largo on post office. I'm finished BUT my daughter who is swamped with finals, wants to pick up a few things for Grandma and Grandpa also. I told her I really want to get them out tomorrow. She has a final at 9 in Miami. Uggh. So if you don't hear from me tomorrow you'll know why

Clipped from this afternoons NWS Tampa discussion............................With a generally stable weather pattern and large scale
subsidence attributed to high pressure, temperatures will
be quite warm/hot for much of the week. Afternoon highs in
the low to mid 80s will be common, some 10 to 15 degrees
above normal. Low temperatures will be similarly warm in the
upper 50s to low 60s. If you happen to enjoy warmer weather
over the holiday, you will probably be happy, as the
general synoptic pattern looks to remain unchanged into next
weekend.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Miami FL
255 PM EST Sat Dec 16 2017
.DISCUSSION...
Strong deep high pressure remains well in control of the region,
which remains in place through at least the middle opf next week.
Current light winds will turn more NE and increase a little on
Sunday as pressure gradients become tighter.
Temperatures will continue to gradually climb back to near normal
values, with afternoon highs reaching the low 80s during the next
couple of days. Model solutions show little to no chances o rain
until mid week, with maybe some slight chances of rain Wednesday
afternoon. Morning lows also gradually warm up into the upper
60s/low 70s by mid week.
In general, beautiful and benign South Florida weather expected
to continue through the forecast period. Enjoy!

Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
folks in the Panhandle-Northern Florida be sure to read this.....................................................................
Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tallahassee FL
1007 AM EST Mon Dec 18 2017
.NEAR TERM [Through Today]...
A dense fog advisory was issued for all but the Florida Panhandle
and Western Big Bend counties until 10 am est. Although the advisory
has expired, patchy fog will continue at several locations for a few
more hours. Otherwise, extensive low level clouds and intermittent
mostly light rain can be expected today with above seasonal temps in
the 70s to around 80 degrees.
.SHORT TERM [Tonight Through Wednesday]...
A relatively strong 500 mb ridge over the Southeast will weaken
Tuesday night and Wednesday as a short wave trough (currently over
the Baja Peninsula) moves eastward across the Southeast. Until
then rain chances for our forecast area will be slight and
confined mainly to the northern parts of our area, on the fringes
of weak Q-G forcing and increasing deep-layer moisture. Rain
chances will increase Wednesday, especially across the FL
Panhandle, southeast AL, and southwest GA, where the greatest
concentration of large scale ascent and moisture will be. (PoPs
will range from 60% at Dothan to 30% at Tallahassee, and less than
20% at Cross City).
Although most of the upper-level height falls will be to our
north, 0-6km bulk shear values of at least 50 knots over our
forecast area would suggest at least some possibility of storm
organization. However, MLCAPE values will struggle to reach 500
J/kg. Thus with limited buoyancy and large-scale ascent, the
threat of isolated severe storms on Wednesday is low, and would
consist primarily of damaging wind gusts (40-60 MPH) or perhaps
a brief tornado, mainly north and west of Tallahassee.
Temperatures are likely to be well above climatology, despite
significant cloud cover during the daytime. Lows will be in the
lower 60s (climatology is lower 40s). Highs will be in the mid
70s (climatology is lower 60s).
.LONG TERM [Wednesday Night Through Monday]...
Rain chances will end quickly Wednesday night once the
aforementioned upper trough and associated surface baroclinic trough
move by, with only a slight drop in temperatures to close out the
work week. Considerable differences arise between the global models
by the weekend. The GFS brings a cold front slowly through our
forecast area and stalls it just to our south, with gradually
cooling temperatures and persistent rain chances through Christmas
Day. The ECMWF keeps the front well to our northwest, with
continued warm temperatures and fair weather. As usual this far
out, we have blended the solutions and get PoPs in the 20-30%
range, highs in the upper 60s (north) to mid 70s (south), and lows
in the 50s. Hopefully the models will trend toward the same
solution in subsequent forecast cycles.

Re: CLOSED 12-8 Florida/Alabama Blog - Southern Snow and Severe
oh boy a traffic nightmare over Tampa way..this from NBC news just awhile ago...................AMPA (WFLA) – Interstate 275 northbound at mile marker 51 is closed due to a fatal crash.
All northbound traffic is being diverted off the highway at Fowler Avenue.
Florida Highway Patrol is investigating the crash between a semi and a truck that happened just before 11:30 a.m.
