According to CoCo our total rainfall was 1.9” and we’ll take it. I like that we’re getting some moisture through the dry season and it’s not so terribly dry. Tuesday back home -1 for high and -22, Wednesday -19 high and -30 and windy, though the forecast isn’t saying how windy. Holy macaroni!!!!

2.32" total here

WD, not sure what you saw.  I would say sleet but with 40 degree surface temps I don't know.  Maybe a cold layer aloft, followed by a warm layer to melt to liquid, a secondary cold layer to refreeze the liquid, then a very shallow warm layer at the surface that didn't allow enough time to melt off before reaching the ground??  The traditional sleet formation process is cold air above, a shallow warm "nose" to melt, then a deeper layer of cold air to the surface allowing the particles to re-freeze.  Might need to report to the late Robert Stack as an unsolved mystery!

Cool article St Pete.  Quite the technology for a movie over 80 years old!

Fantasy land modeling but this would be quite interesting.  Snow and ice in FL - and plenty of it by FL standards.

Late January through February outlook - Page 6 Za0biHx

Late January through February outlook - Page 6 BKgOs54

Here are the modeled surface temps to go with the 2nd image. That would do the trick. Hard to get cold enough temps into FL however before the precip exits. It happens but we need luck! As a saying goes "cold without snow is a waste of cold". If it's going to be sub-freezing, let it snow to give me something to get excited about versus just freezing my butt off.

Eek. I am still wearing long johns under pajamas. Refuse to use heat, although it wouldn’t be a bad idea to test unit, but it’s getting old. And I don’t like it, so no.
Cannot imagine what folks in Midwest are going to experience. Warned my parents to prepare, not their first rodeo, but they are getting older.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
308 AM EST Tue Jan 29 2019

.SHORT TERM (Today-Wednesday)...
A polar low will dive over the Great Lakes today and
tonight with a deep U/L trough east of the Rockies. Surface
low over the Great Lakes will lift over southeast Canada,
with a trailing cold front extending along the eastern
seaboard to the north central Gulf of Mexico pushing slowly
southeast across the Florida peninsula late today and
tonight. Band of showers ahead of the front will gradually
decrease in areal coverage as the front pushes across the
forecast area as the U/L support lifts rapidly away from the
region...with best chance of showers across the nature
coast. The cold front will stall across the Florida straits
on Wednesday...with surface high pressure building over the
southeast U.S. and Florida in the wake of the front with a
reinforcing shot of cool dry air advecting over west central
and southwest Florida.

.LONG TERM (Wednesday night-Monday)...
Surface high pressure will move to the mid Atlantic coast on
Thursday with easterly boundary layer flow developing across
the Florida peninsula. This will allow the airmass across
the region to modify with warmer temperatures and increasing
low level moisture. The frontal boundary over the Florida
straits will lift slowly north across the southern and
central peninsula with a chance of showers developing Friday
and Saturday. A southern stream disturbance may also push
across the Gulf of Mexico and Florida riding over the
frontal boundary which would enhance shower activity Friday
and Friday night. High pressure will build over the mid
Atlantic coast and Florida late in the weekend and into
early next week however mild conditions will persist.

That is impressive you got down to 35 this morning in Pinellas County. You must be in a cold pocket this AM Largo. It is 33 here with patchy frost on the ground. Looks like we get a bit of rain tonight then cold again tomorrow with possibly a light freeze/frost the next 2 nights. After that it looks like a significant warm up starting late in the week and lasting all the way into next week. Forecasted highs are currently in the mid 70's, but I am not quite sure I believe that just yet.

Thanks for the article, StPete. Cool stuff.

35 degrees? Wow Largo. That shows you how being "inland" can make a world of difference -- even in Pinellas. I never got below 40 this morning.

And I agree with your snow/cold, Aug. What you don't want is that ice! You had quite a bit of ice up there in 89 (I think).

Late January through February outlook - Page 6 Empty Re: Late January through February outlook

Post by LargoFL Wed Jan 30, 2019 4:23 am

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
300 AM EST Wed Jan 30 2019

.DISCUSSION (Today - Next Tuesday)...
The cold front will exit the region early this morning, but some
low level moisture will remain trapped under the inversion around
900-850 mb which will lead to lingering clouds through the day. A
few light showers/sprinkles will also remain possible across the
southern counties close to the boundary. Northerly winds behind
the front will usher in the next shot of cool dry air during the
day with high temperatures from the mid 50s north to mid 60s
south. Tonight the clouds will persist across much of the region
with the cold air advection continuing allowing temperatures to
dip to near freezing across Levy county with mid 30s across much
of the remainder of the Nature Coast and mainly 40s elsewhere.
Could see some frost in spots across the Nature Coast, but the
expected clouds should preclude any widespread heavy frost in most
locations.

For Thursday into early Friday the moderating trend will get
underway as surface high pressure over the eastern U.S. moves off
the Mid-Atlantic coast veering winds to a more easterly direction.
At the same time the next shortwave will be moving through the
eastern U.S. trough across the northern Gulf of Mexico. This will
tap the moisture returning to the region leading to more clouds
and a chance of showers over the eastern half of the Florida
peninsula Thursday and then the entire peninsula Friday into
Saturday. Temperatures will remain below normal on Thursday then
return to near to slightly above normal values for Friday and
Saturday.

Sunday through Tuesday the eastern U.S. trough will have exited
to the east with weak ridging building over Florida allowing
partly cloudy and dry weather to return with above normal
temperatures.

NWS MIAMI...354 AM EST Wed Jan 30 2019

...MODERATE RISK OF RIP CURRENTS ATLANTIC BEACHES...
...CHOPPY BOATING CONDITIONS IN THE GULF STREAM LATE TONIGHT...

This hazardous weather outlook is for South Florida.

.DAY ONE...TODAY AND TONIGHT

Rip currents: There is a moderate risk of rip currents along all
Atlantic beaches. The risk may increase late this evening with
stronger northeasterly flow.

Wind: Northeast winds will increase to 15 to 20 knots across the
offshore Atlantic waters and offshore Gulf waters late tonight.

Temperatures: Low temperatures will bottom out in the upper 40s to
around 50 across much of interior South Florida by daybreak this
morning. A few locations along the Gulf coast and western areas of
the Atlantic metro may also drop into the upper 40s. Glades and
Hendry county are expected to dip into the upper 40s to around 50
again late tonight into Thursday morning.

Waves: Occasional seas up to 7 feet are possible late tonight in the
Gulf Stream waters offshore Palm Beach County.

.DAYS TWO THROUGH SEVEN...THURSDAY THROUGH TUESDAY

Breezy east-northeast winds will drive a small northeasterly swell
through the Atlantic waters through late week. Expect choppy
conditions over the Gulf Stream, with the potential for hazardous
boating conditions at times. This will also lead to an increased risk
for rip currents along the Atlantic beaches, especially in Palm Beach
County.

A few thunderstorms are possible Friday and Saturday as a weak
disturbance crosses the region.

.SPOTTER INFORMATION STATEMENT...

Spotter activation will not be needed today.

For more information...visit the National Weather Service in
Miami website at www.weather.gov/miami.

The coldest temperature ever recorded in the state of Florida is -2 degrees, which occurred on February 13, 1899, in Tallahassee which is located about 240 miles north of Clearwater. On February 13, 1899, the Great Blizzard of 1899 struck the northeastern part of North America spreading record temperatures all the way down to Cuba and bringing the only below zero temperature reading ever recorded in Florida.

Area Forecast Discussion
National Weather Service Tampa Bay Ruskin FL
921 AM EST Wed Jan 30 2019

.UPDATE...
The front that moved through the area yesterday has shifted south
over southern Florida allowing for high pressure to build in from
the north. The 12Z morning sounding is showing an increase in total
PW from 24 hours ago, primarily in the lower levels below 700 MB.
This is supporting some residual cloudiness that will stick around
for most of today, but we should stay rain-free. With high pressure
to the north, we can expect a north-northeast wind flow and cool
below average temperatures through the day. Highs will max out in
the mid 50`s along the Nature Coast to the low to mid 60`s from
Tampa Bay southward, which is about 10 degrees below average. Only
change needed to forecast is to remove any mention of showers over
southwest Florida. Otherwise the forecast is tracking well with no
other changes needed.

Remember Christmas, 1989? I lived in Gainesville at the time, was below freezing for two days and got down to 17°. Wiped out most of the citrus industry north of Clermont, and ushered in the housing boom for central Florida.

From my moms area in eastern IA. And to think there's a good chance tonight will be colder. These don't factor in the wind chills that were between -40 and -60. They get a well deserved reprieve over the weekend with highs in the 40's.

Good morning Largo. We did have a light freeze here Largo, but the wind came up overnight and kept the temps from dropping too low. In fact, it was 32 when I went to bed last night, but then it came up to 34 this morning at sunrise due to the wind mixing the air. There was a thin skim of ice on the water buckets out by the hog pen and a little bit of patchy frost, but once again we were spared from a killer freeze. Looks like the warm up begins today. With the cold Gulf temps now it looks like with the warmer weather we will most likely be dealing with Sea Fog.

NWS Miami............Today and Tonight...

Some deamplification of the upper flow pattern will occur, with
rising heights over the eastern states. This will allow high
pressure to build into South Florida behind a cold front which has
stalled to our south. With moist low-level flow, scattered
showers are expected. This chance will initially be over the
Atlantic waters early this morning, but as the low-level flow over
land areas gradually turns NNE-NE shower chances should gradually
spread inland into the east coast metro areas later this morning
and afternoon. Temperatures will moderate a bit from yesterday,
with highs mostly in the 70s and lows ranging from the 50s over
the southwest interior to the upper 60s along the Atlantic
beaches.
